What To Expect
Rowing is a demanding sport. A current high school sports physical is required. Please inform coaches of any medical conditions, including allergies or asthma. These conditions do not prevent participation, but we need to know how to support your rower if an issue arises.
Hickory Rowing Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We operate independently and are not affiliated with Chesapeake Public Schools or any individual school. Because of this, our program relies on parent involvement and support to keep the team running and our athletes on the water.
We have two competition seasons in crew, fall and spring. We are essentially a travel team. We compete locally in Norfolk and Elizabeth City, NC, and we also travel throughout the region. Our races have taken us as far north as Philadelphia, PA, Camden, NJ, and Boston, MA, and as far south as High Point, NC. Future seasons may include additional or different race locations as opportunities arise. Race locations are discussed and chosen by the coaching staff and the board of directors. Travel is an exciting and memorable part of the team experience.
If you are new to rowing, you are not alone. Many families start with no experience. Our returning parents and rowers are welcoming and ready to help you learn how everything works. You will pick things up quickly, and you will likely enjoy becoming part of the team community.
Rowers burn a lot of energy, so expect an increased appetite once training begins. Nutritious meals and snacks help with recovery and performance.
Hydration is essential. Bring water to every practice and drink throughout the day. Water is best. We encourage athletes to avoid energy drinks.
Hands will develop blisters and eventually calluses. This is normal. Coaches will teach proper care. Blisters should be drained carefully and kept clean and dry while healing.
Soreness is common as the body adapts to new movements. Consistent training builds strength over time. If pain is sharp or unusual, seek medical guidance.
The most important way to support your rower is to help them attend practices consistently. Rowing relies on repetition and time together in the boat. Regular attendance builds fitness, teamwork, and speed. If your rower needs to miss a practice, please notify their coach in advance.
As a club sport, we do not make cuts. Every rower has a place here. Athletes who attend practice consistently will have the strongest opportunities to earn seats in racing boats throughout the season.
Rowing takes effort, but the growth, strength, and confidence it builds make the work worthwhile.
