History

In the summer of 1998 a group of students from Hickory High School became members of Hampton Roads Rowing Club. This positive experience created a desire to promote rowing in their high school and community by establishing a rowing club and taking part in regattas.

To begin this tradition in their hometown of Chesapeake, Virginia these students formed Hickory Rowing Club and have worked diligently over the years to raise funds to purchase boats and equipment necessary to make rowing possible.

Hampton Roads rowing opponents includes nine school sponsored clubs. In addition, numerous high schools in other parts of the commonwealth field teams that Hickory faces in regional races.

Since the club's inception many changes have taken place. What started out as a club without coaches and only 14 members, has grown into a self-supporting club with as many as 50 members at various times.  Our team sustained the loss of large numbers of seniors two years in a row resulting in this years team totaling 29 members.

Boathouse

Atlantic Yacht Basin has been attracting discerning captains and yacht owners from all over the world since 1936. The family owned business for three generations has maintained the standards and tradition of Atlantic Yacht Basin. The boatyard is one of the finest facilities on the waterway and a perfect home to our club.

The Atlantic Yacht Basin has graciously provided us our boathouse without charge. It is therefore extremely important for our rowers to understand that we are guests at Atlantic Yacht Basin and we must always follow their rules and treat their facilities with respect. The Boathouse is PRIVATE PROPERTY!!! Please keep the Atlantic Yacht Basin area clean and neat; don't litter!

We also share the boathouse with Great Bridge and Juniper rowing clubs. Do not use or move things that do not belong to you.

No running or horseplay is allowed in and around the boathouse, on the docks, or ramps.

Do not interfere with another team's practice. Be in the area designated by the coach at all times. Get your boats into and out of the water quickly -- a one-minute dock time is our goal... we need to strive to meet this goal.
